Confessions of a First Year PhD Student...Cont.

Just finished my second semester, and this one went much better. Why, you ask? Ok, here's what I changed.

First, I reassessed my "aggressive" goal of completing all core courses in XX amount of time. Not only was my original plan unrealistic in the amount of work required, it was not even possible according to the course offering schedule! Confessions of a First Year PhD Student...

Wow - I just finished my first semester and it was...interesting. Academically I did very well and very poorly at the same time. I worked very hard, learned a lot of "new information", found out that teaching is not considered as valuable as research (What?!), and resolved to keep going.

Was anyone else taken "off-guard" by their first semester in a PhD program?
